UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGICAL TRAINING AND PROMOTION OF RECREATIONAL DIVERS
In addition to promoting underwater archaeology through the dissemination of information (UNESCO – 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage) and the annual international conferences in this field, an important part of DEGUWA's activities is the support of training programs:
Through NAS courses (Nautical Archaeology Society), participants can acquire and refine their skills in various disciplines of underwater archaeological practice and theory. These courses are open to both amateurs and (aspiring) scientists and are particularly well-suited for archaeology students. The training scheme is internationally recognized and may also enable participation in underwater archaeological projects. While the training does not replace a formal degree in archaeology, it provides a highly specific insight into the unique aspects of underwater excavation activities.
Credits can be earned through practical exercises (e.g., surveying, drawing, photography), participation in conferences or further training, organized archaeological dives, museum visits, historical city tours, and other activities (such as attending lectures, seminars, and presentations).
These events must be thematically or professionally relevant.
All inquiries regarding training should be directed to Dr. Georg Osterfeld.

The first level ("Foundation in Maritime Archaeology") can be obtained through an online seminar (six evenings).
For the second level ("Certificate in Maritime Archaeology"), participants must earn 100 credits through courses, conferences, and/or fieldwork, 10 of which can be obtained through the practical diving course "Measuring, Surveying, Mapping."
The third and highest level ("Award in Maritime Archaeology") is achieved by earning 300 credits or by completing the "NAS Certificate" plus an additional 200 credits. 20 credits must be earned through practical diving training days. Finally, a 2,000-word report must be submitted.

Excursions
Trips to Museums
We invite all interested divers and non-divers to join us in visiting museums relevant to underwater archaeology.
We plan time for guided tours, independent exploration, and perhaps even a visit to the museum restaurants...
For all NAS students and Credit collectors, these excursions are recognized with 5 NAS Credits.
